"DISASTER PREPAREDNESS: TURN THE TABLES ON DISASTER"

In June of 2007, CCMSI's Regional Vice President David Henwood and City of Decatur Illinois Risk Manager Barry Leonard presented "Disaster/Crisis Management Planning" at PRIMA's 28th Annual Conference in Boston on Wednesday, June 13th.

The presentation addressed the types of disasters or crisises that could impact risk managers and asked are you prepared to manage that risk of loss before it occurs? Will you have tornado, hurricane, blizzard, terrorist attack or earthquake and how will that event affect your ability to operate your municipality/public entity?

Again, the session presentation reviewed the six stages of disaster/crisis management planning (from pre-planning - testing) and tools were suggested to begin the process before a disaster impacts a public entity. Specific focus was identified on the core tasks that must be preformed to keep a entity functioning.

The learning objectives addressed the following:

  • Discuss the probability and definition of a disaster.
  • Understand why Disaster/Crisis Management is an exposure that each risk manager has the inherent duty to prepare for.
  • Understand and review the six essential phases of disaster/crisis management planning process, from pre-planning through testing.
